China coronavirus: Death toll rises as disease spreads

The death toll from a newly-discovered coronavirus in China rose to 41 on the day of the Lunar New Year, one of the most important events. Another 15 deaths in Hubei province, where the outbreak began, were announced. Health officials were struggling to contain the outbreak because of the low number of overseas cases as millions of people traveled for the Chinese New Year, canceling many festivities. There were over 1,200 confirmed cases in China at the time. The virus had also spread to Europe, with three cases confirmed in France. The UK was investigating suspected cases, while Australia confirmed several cases in Melbourne and Sydney.

The coronavirus caused severe acute respiratory infection with symptoms like fever, followed by a dry cough, and then, after a week, lead to shortness of breath, with some patients needing hospital treatment. About a quarter of cases were severe, and there was no specific cure or vaccine. Travel restrictions were in place in Hubei, with Wuhan effectively on lockdown. Major tourist sites and public events across China were also canceled or closed. Cases outside Hubei, including in other countries, were reported.

The World Health Organization had not classified the virus as an "international emergency" at that time because of the low number of overseas cases but acknowledged it might become one.
